Ah, the end of the school year! This means studying for finals and lots of time outside in the lovely spring weather (although it's very rainy today). Normally the music school is going through what I like to call "performances on X-Games Mode." Now, I know it sounds silly, but the spring semester is when everyone schedules everything, and by everything I mean everything. There rarely is a weekend where I don't have a performance, and this last from the end of March to the end of April.

One of the biggest performances I have specifically this year is being a part of accompanying The Butler Ballet's Sleeping Beauty. This three hour performance is divided into three acts with a brief intermission in between each one. As a horn player, my face is already aching from thinking of it! On top of stamina, precise and consistent playing is a requirement, especially if your accompanying for one of the top dance schools in the country. Maestro has given us quite the demanding job, and there are a lot of people relying on the Butler Symphony Orchestra to help carry out three fantastic shows.
As principal of the horn section, it's also difficult to have extra responsibilities such as being in charge of sectionals, having nuanced solos, and keeping yourself in top shape to perform all the time. It's stressful, but working with your colleagues for the betterment of the orchestra and the ballet itself is very rewarding to me. This is what inspires me to be a better musician!
I always take a step back after each rehearsal, no matter how good or bad it went, and think of how much I and everyone else has grown to this exact moment. It's good to look at the positive, even more so when you're stressed and think everything isn't going right. If you're not doing anything next weekend (April 26th-28th) then you should come out and see Sleeping Beauty for yourself! Click the image below to look at the description and to purchase tickets.
